About Ana

I am a chemist and university tutor with a genuine love of science and teaching. I have always been curious about how and why things work, and that curiosity eventually led me to a career in science. I have a PhD in Chemistry/Materials Science and an academic background spanning Chemistry, Physics and Engineering, including several years of research experience in different countries.

One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is having the opportunity to pass some of that curiosity on to my students. I particularly enjoy those moments when something that seemed confusing finally clicks and a student begins to feel more confident in their own abilities.

Having worked with students of different ages and from a wide range of educational backgrounds, I understand that everyone learns differently. I enjoy teaching learners at all stages of life and aim to create a relaxed and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and taking the time they need to understand a topic properly.

For me, tutoring is not simply about getting through an exam. I want students to develop a real understanding of what they are learning and, hopefully, discover that science can be much more interesting and enjoyable than they thought!

About the lesson

I believe science becomes much easier when you understand the ideas behind it rather than simply memorising formulas and definitions. My approach is patient, friendly and adapted to each student’s level, with a strong focus on building confidence and making difficult concepts clear and approachable.

I am a chemist with a PhD in Chemistry/Materials Science and postgraduate training in Physics and Engineering. I currently teach Physics and Biology at university Access/Foundation level and have several years of experience working with students from different educational backgrounds.

I offer support in Chemistry, Physics and Biology for secondary-level students, as well as Foundation, Access and early university-level students. Lessons can focus on understanding course material, working through problems and calculations, exam preparation, or revisiting topics that need a little more attention.

A typical lesson starts by identifying what you would like to work on and where the difficulties are. We then work through the underlying concepts together before applying them to examples, problems or questions, with plenty of opportunity to stop, ask questions and revisit anything that is unclear. Lessons are typically one hour and are adapted to each student’s goals and pace.

I am particularly happy to work with students who feel that science is “not for them”, who have lost confidence in the subject, or who simply need concepts explained in a different way!

Details

Relevant learning materials and practice exercises can be provided as appropriate and are included in the lesson fee. There are no additional charges for online lessons or lessons arranged at a mutually convenient location on or around the University of Galway campus. A €10 travel fee applies when I travel to the student's location.
