About Jaz

Hi! I'm Jaz, an enthusiastic, patient and flexible tutor with over 10 years' experience as a classroom teacher, and 6 years' experience as an AQA GCSE English Literature examiner. Before becoming a teacher I worked as an SEN teaching assistant, which has given me a close insight into how challenging the classroom (and the content) can be for children with autism, ADHD and dyslexia in particular. I am experienced at adapting my resources and teaching style to ensure it is accessible for my students. I have taught in a number of highly successful mainstream schools and a Pupil Referral Unit working with students of all abilities across Key Stages 3 and 4, including Grade 9 ability students, as well as those with a wide range of additional learning needs who find English more challenging. My own enthusiasm for literature and learning is an important part of my approach to teaching. I love exploring new interpretations and helping students to be able to clearly explain their fantastic ideas, this at its core is what English is really about for me: exploration and imagination. Most students have this in abundance, but they need help gaining the confidence to clearly verbalise and organise their ideas on paper. As a highly experienced examiner, I have a thorough knowledge of what is required in examinations: whether the issue is with analysis of texts, how to structure a response, or more general exam technique, I can help. I also have experience with all aspects of reading, writing, and oracy at Key Stage 3. I am also able to offer support with developing writing skills, covering a range of different purposes. My approach is completely flexible, and I am more than happy to adapt lessons to suit your individual needs. My work as an examiner is with AQA; I am comfortable to work with different specifications or texts as required.

About the lesson

I’ll be there to guide and support your child with patience, enthusiasm and kindness. I believe the foundations to success are built through positive relationships and breaking down the content into more digestible chunks, along with focused practising. I adapt each of my tutoring sessions according to the needs of each student, incorporating their interests where appropriate. I slowly build their confidence through scaffolding, encouragement and ultimately fostering independence, so they can be their best.
