About Kristin
I am a second career teacher, but I have been unofficially teaching my entire life! In my previous career, I regularly trained new employees, and that experience led me to go back to school to become a teacher. I have now been teaching middle school for 10 years, and I love it! I am certified to teach ELA in middle and high school, but my experience is in 7th and 8th grade. My goal is not to make students love ELA but rather to help them hate it a little less.

My tutoring sessions are designed to help middle and high school students become stronger, more confident readers and writers—not simply complete an assignment. I specialize in text analysis, grammar, and writing support, with lessons tailored to each student’s individual needs, skill level, and academic goals.
For text analysis, I help students move beyond basic comprehension to understand how and why a text works. We can focus on skills such as identifying theme and central idea, analyzing character development, interpreting symbolism and figurative language, examining an author’s craft and purpose, making inferences, and selecting strong textual evidence.
For writing, I can support students at any stage of the process, from brainstorming and organization to drafting and revision. Rather than simply correcting a student’s work, I teach students how to recognize weaknesses in their own writing and make purposeful improvements. We can work on literary analysis, argumentative and informational writing, constructed responses, essays, and general academic writing.
For grammar, I focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind grammar rules so they can apply them independently. Lessons can target sentence structure, punctuation, parts of speech, usage, common errors, and editing and revision skills.
What sets my approach apart is my experience working directly with adolescent learners and my understanding that students do not all struggle for the same reasons. Sometimes a student needs a concept explained differently; sometimes they need a clear strategy for approaching a difficult task; and sometimes they simply need guided practice that builds confidence and independence. I break complex skills into manageable steps, provide clear and practical feedback, and adjust my instruction based on what I see the student doing in real time.
My goal is for students to leave tutoring with more than a finished assignment or a better grade. I want them to develop strategies and skills they can use independently in future classes, assignments, and assessments.
