About Alex

My old school motto was 'Lumen Accipe Et Imperti' - which translates to receive the light and pass it on. I enjoy helping make people's lives better, more manageable and interesting. A lot of learning is about having confidence, and that comes through enjoying learning. When I learned to speak the Thai language I enjoyed all the puns and tones to do with that language - this was because the teacher had a fun approach to learning.

About the lesson

Initially, the first sessions will be ‘Discovery Lessons’ to explore your needs, goals, and intentions for each area of language use—whether it’s speaking, writing, grammar, idioms, or critical thinking. These sessions help tailor the lessons to your specific requirements.

My approach focuses on encouragement and confidence-building, ensuring that what is learned is regularly reviewed and practiced in a supportive environment. I guide students to take an active role in their learning, helping them develop independence and the skills needed to use English effectively in real-life situations.
During our Discovery Lessons, we’ll discuss your goals and specific language needs, and from there, I’ll customize the materials we use. If any particular books or resources are needed, I can advise on what’s best to support your learning or provide relevant materials.

I also take an active part in Toastmasters International, a forum for practicing public speaking. I have an Honours degree in Political Science and Administration from Victoria University of Wellington with papers in Linguistics and Social Science. I have taught English as a Foreign Language in New Zealand, Thailand, and Japan and provided private lessons in English for Business. I completed teacher training with Saxoncourt Education in Japan and hold a Foundations of English Training Certificate.

Lessons are available online or face-to-face at the tutor’s home, providing flexibility to suit your learning style and schedule.

My lessons are typically an hour long, although a longer period can be arranged for special purposes. The emphasis will be on fluency and dynamics rather than on rules.
