About Cathryn

I have been a teacher for the past 29 years. I am excited to hear what you would like to study so that I can use my experience to support you in your achievement.

I have taught Art and Design, spending time as Head of Department for four of those years. I have tutored students through to GCSE level and have run excellent departments with a great record for placing students through to further education on art and design courses.

I have classroom experience as a teacher of GCSE English and STEM (Science, Technology, English, Maths) at Route 39 Academy, where learning was project based, encouraging students at Key Stage 3 and GCSE to problem solve and learn by doing, engaging in projects that have a real life application.

I am currently a teacher and the Director of Curriculum for a private company, delivering social-emotional education and training to schools worldwide. My work here focuses on behaviour and communication, empowering the individual to build confidence, focus and accomplishment. I have worked with students from Reception through high school, to sixth form, university and with teachers and adults in the community. I know that developing a confident sense of self is the best foundation for all educational achievement and my experience working in this area is a unique strength in my approach to teaching.

I have extensive experience teaching English as an Additional Language for those where English is not their first language, working both in the UK and abroad.

I was Director of Studies/Head of School and an active classroom teacher of English for an International English Language School for five years. I have taught English in multiple summer schools in the UK. I have a broad span of experience, teaching students from primary age to adults on a one to one basis and within a classroom setting, from complete beginner to advanced level English.

I was a teacher and Project Manager for High Schools in the Northwest of England for five years, focusing on English language development across all curriculum subjects to GCSE level within UK schools.

About the lesson

When teaching GCSE/Exam English Language and literature I will first assess where you are currently at in your learning. I will identify the key areas for development with you based on feedback you have already received from school/class teachers and results and levels from any practice exams you have taken. Together, we will ensure that you gain a comprehensive knowledge of language features and writing devices; we will identify the areas where you can better develop your answers; we will look at structuring timed answers to gain the maximum marks. Each lesson is one hour in length. I provide homework tasks and practice activites each lesson and give feedback on your progression and achievement with these each week.

When teaching English as an additional language we will cover the core skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. I will test and assess your current level of English against the Common European Framework of Reference for Language acquisition (CEFR) I will structure your learning at the appropriate level for you. We will ensure that you gain a comprehensive knowledge of times and tenses and have practice applying them in both written and spoken scenarios.

My role as tutor is to structure and guide your study, encouraging you to learn by doing where you will be actively engaged in your learning journey.
