About Elliot
I am an enthusiastic tutor who is passionate about helping students realise their full potential, whilst cultivating an enjoyment in their subject. As a major academic scholar at Magdalen College School, Oxford, I studied maths and sciences at A-level, achieving grades of A* (Maths) AAA (Further Maths, Physics, Music). Although my greatest academic strengths are maths and physics, my personal interest led me to study Music at the University of Leeds, where I graduated with a 1st Class Honours degree. I tailored my degree to include a mix of musicology, performance, pedagogical techniques, and a strong side component of philosophy. I'm patient and friendly, and am skilled at quickly developing a rapport with children and teenagers. I currently work as a tutor and freelance musician. I have been giving one-on-one guitar lessons since 2016. I teach both children and adults from beginners to advanced players. As well as this I have studied teaching techniques as part of my degree. I have also had experience in a language school working with teenage students visiting the UK to improve their English. This role required me to oversee groups of 10-20 students, plan their activities daily, develop a friendly yet authoritative rapport with them (which required excellent communication given their level of English). With a breadth of interests and skills that cross over sciences, arts and humanities, I am accustomed to approaching a range of problems using different conventions and styles of thinking. I aim to understand a student's own way of thinking and learning and use this to develop their weaker areas in ways to which they are most receptive. In doing so, I aim to develop their confidence in their own ability to tackle problems and produce work of a high standard in areas they might not initially feel so comfortable in. Elliot is a thoughtful and subtle player with an impressive technical basis. He is a perceptive and sympathetic guide to other students: honing these teaching skills is part of what our students do in performance classes at Leeds, so I've seen a fair bit of Elliot in action as a teacher as well as on stage.
He was also a tremendous support to his fellow students, playing in their ensembles and helping out with their arrangements. He has a very nice manner and temperament, and I'm sure he will continue to flourish as a tutor and a player.See more recommendations
