About Robbert
I am a full-time artist, portrait painter, art historian and writer of art publications. I have taught art for 30 years and have supported young artists to reach a level of professionally exhibiting and selling through a gallery. I myself professionally created portraits for international clients (Embassies, United Nations, multinational companies, families) making stately portraits, presents for promotions, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries etc; the portraits are classical, using materials typical for the Renaissance and Impressionism (Oils, Gouache, Watercolours, Pastels, Sanguine, Charcoal); the caricatures always respect the model without making them ridiculous, while adding anecdotal fun, typical of the represented individual’s personal life. My teaching is very personal, empathetic, and educated, as well as focusing on technique and skill, while respecting each student's level and guiding them intuitively towards their next ‘personal best’ level. On the way to that achievement we look at and derive inspiration from the great masters (Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, ...) or the modern Degas, Van Gogh, or Hockney. The lessons series start with a chat on what you want to achieve as a student and then let you draw something your choice to assess your level. Whether the art student prepares for an exam, just wants to start enjoying art, or develop to a next level that can be professional, anyone’s need is addressed.

Students ranging from children to senior adults are all extremely satisfied with their progress after just a few of my drawing or painting lessons; some have become successful exhibiting artists, e.g. my own daughter Sophie Ruigrok. In our lessons we usually start with drawing natural objects such as leaves, flowers or photographs of animals, then evolve to still lives and the human figure including portraits and hands — from life or after Renaissance artists. We approach the lesson from the student’s personal level of skill, by fully respecting their spontaneous preferences. The style of teaching is very interactive, encouraging, greatly respecting and supportive of the artistic style and personality of the pupil, while maximising skills, and uncovering the pleasure of successful art making. My daughter sought support through tutorials from Rob for GCSE Art History. It was one of the best decisions we have taken! Not only have my daughter’s grades improved and her confidence boosted, it has genuinely kindled an interest art history in her. Thank you Rob.
We highly recommend him. Before our trip to Florence, we decided to take art history lessons to enhance our visit to the Uffizi Gallery, and Robbert’s classes turned out to be the perfect choice. Over six sessions, he far exceeded our expectations with his engaging, enthusiastic teaching style.
Robbert has an incredible depth of knowledge about the Renaissance period and a remarkable ability to bring each painting to life. His explanations of the intricate symbolism in works by artists like Botticelli and Raphael—often tied to Greek and Roman culture—gave us a completely new perspective.
Thanks to Robbert, we approached the Uffizi with a much deeper understanding, and our visit was far more meaningful and enjoyable as a result. If you’re planning a trip or simply want to deepen your appreciation of art, I can’t recommend his classes highly enough.Robbert is a very good teacher. He gently guides you, allowing you to see your potential by the end of the first lesson.
Working with grid helped me, as a complete beginner and now I can implement my ideas with this useful tool. Robbert instilled a love for old masters, like Michelangelo and Leonardo in me and I'm very grateful to him for unveiling the simple means of copying old masters, which is patience doing hatching and not being afraid, because drawing is about joy in every line.My teenage daughter has been taking virtual classes with Robbert for the past years.
Robbert is engaging and interactive making each session enjoyable and productive. He is dedicated and passionate with the teaching. Despite the virtual format, the classes feel personal and connected. I feel fortunate to have Robbert as my daughter’s art teacher.

Robbert is a great tutor when it comes to Art history, his enthusiasm and ability to get across relevant ideas of the artist or period is a joy to listen to.
I have had several theoretical lessons connected with Art history and have always found them informative and interesting.
Going on field trips to the main Art galleries in London is another excellent and enjoyable experience as Robbert always brings his wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to make the visits a highly enjoyable experience.
Sometime ago I worked, I worked on a number of papers, with the tutorage of Robbert, I can quite frankly tell you not only was he a pleasure to work with, and had any number of interesting twist and terms to help along with the paper, but also his understanding of our history was an incredible help, I would have no hesitation in recommending Robert for any project he felt he was capable of. I can remember one evening late at night. I came down to the last sentences of this paper before he sent it in. I needed some thoughts and reviews the truth is it was 10 at night I’d sent Him a review see what he thought. The idea was he would read it the following morning, by 11 o’clock. He returned with some wonderful ideas that help me push through to the end. What a pleasure to work with this gentleman.
