About Rae

Hi, I’m Rae!

I’m an English teacher with a degree in Linguistic Anthropology and a minor in Asian Studies, and I specialize in beginners. I lived and taught in Japan and Taiwan for years, so I know exactly what it feels like to be the one who can’t read the menu. That’s why my lessons are built around speaking from day one, in a relaxed space where mistakes are normal.

About the lesson

You don’t have to be good at English to start. You just have to start.

I’ve taught English for over a decade, and my students have ranged from less than a month old all the way up to their eighties. I wrote my own curriculum and ran it myself. I’ve also tutored online for eight years, with students I had first met in person, so I know how to keep lessons personal and consistent on a screen. I teach fully in English, so students hear and use it from the first minute.

Mistakes aren’t your problem. Mistakes are how it works. In my lessons you’ll speak from the first class, you’ll get things wrong, we’ll laugh about it, and you’ll get better faster than you think. Tell me what you want to use English for, and I’ll build the lessons around that.

I have had the privilege of studying under Rae from fourth grade of elementary school through my first year of junior high, and I can unreservedly recommend her. Over these formative years, she has proven to be a meticulous and perspicacious instructor who explains even the most abstruse grammar concepts with remarkable lucidity. Her rigorous speaking practice and her emphasis on cultivating native-like modes of thinking furnished me with an indelible foundation in English, which enabled me to achieve a high score on the TOEFL speaking section. Her lessons were always tailored to my evolving needs, and her incisive feedback has ameliorated my writing considerably. Beyond her erudition, she is unfailingly patient and encouraging, fostering a rapport that made learning both effective and enjoyable. Her conscientious preparation and steadfast dedication have bolstered my confidence in English. I wholeheartedly recommend her to any prospective student.
