About Joel

I HATED my English classes when I was in High School. They were boring and I simply didn't see why they were necessary. It wasn't until a college-level course in European History, oddly enough, that I fell in love with English.

I'm an English I teacher who has experience working in small-group and individual settings with a range of students and their academic levels. However, I haven't always been a teacher. I spent 5 years working at a college Career Center and another 5 years in college admissions. While I love teaching ELA, I'm also happy to assist with resume writing, test prep, and admissions essays!

About the lesson

My personalized lessons allow for each tutoring session with a student to focus on their specific needs and individual goals, while still keeping the end goal in mind. My lessons are interactive and, when possible, gamify the learning experience. A typical lesson includes a combination of:

- A warm-up that combines background knowledge and previews the lesson (5 minutes)
- An introduction that connects the lesson with real-world application (10 minutes)
- An activity that gamifies learning (25 minutes)
- Connecting the learning to STAAR and EOC testing (10 minutes)
- Reflection and "homework" (10 minutes)

My lessons are for English Language and Reading students in any grade of Junior High and High School.

I've known Joel for one year, and as his mentor and English 1 team member, I have witnessed daily his desire to teach, help students, and learn. He often arrives an hour earlier than required, using that time to review lessons and meet with me to discuss best practices to approach learning and struggling students. Personality wise, he's upbeat, passionate, and loves spreadsheets. Joel is an asset to the team and encourages me to be a better teacher.
