About Claire

I have been working in education since 2007 after graduating from Haverford College with a BA in English. I have taught in schools across the country and the world including Colorado, Singapore, Alaska, Chile, Arizona, and Oregon. In 2017 I received an MA in Literature from Middlebury College's Bread Loaf School of English, part of which included a summer studying at Oxford University in the UK.

I have written original curriculum throughout my career, including the entire grade level schemes of work and taught IB classes for four years at the Verde Valley School, where I participated in regular IB certification and training courses.

I worked in the Writing Center at Simmons University, offering writing support to graduate students while I worked on my MFA in Creative Writing for Children. I currently write children's books, teach creative writing classes, and offer mentorship to youth.

In addition to my love of reading, writing, and teaching, I am also a singer and performer, own a local production company, love to dance, and spend lots of time exploring the outdoors by foot or bike with my pup, Haiku.

About the lesson

I want to be a cheerleader and advocate for your student's learning journey. I believe in passion-driven learning and finding the spark of joy in the learning process. I believe in a holistic approach that recognizes the whole person, celebrates their strengths, and offers feedback and guidance in the most empowering and encouraging way.

I am passionate about language, literature, and writing and love helping students find their voice and communicate their ideas clearly and passionately. I meet students where they're at and see myself much more as a mentor than a tutor. I commonly use the socratic method of asking questions until students come to their own conclusions.

I am best suited to motivated students between the ages of 11-18, but will make an exception for younger students (no younger than 8) with advanced reading and writing skills and interest. I have taught students from age 5-graduate school and can adjust my content and approach accordingly.
