About Katherine

I am an Aerospace engineering. Although I have studied rocket science, I am more focussed on airspace, helicopters and aeroplanes. Having studied this degree I have an intense proficiency in Maths and would love to pass this onto students. Mathematics is all around us and is an essential skill in life, and I want to inspire young people to go onto study STEM subjects.

I have tutored for several years freelance and within a company, with students ranging from 10 to 17 years old.

About the lesson

For the first lesson, I will take the time to go through your aspirations and set realistic goals to help you achieve those aspirations. To set the goals, I will review classwork as well as recent tests to check understanding and what level you are working at.

Following this, I have several general approaches, each will be discussed with you as well as my own input to find the one that will work best for you:
Generally if you are a high attainer and aiming for those last few marks, we will do a lot of question based learning to eliminate those pesky stupid mistakes. We will also read ahead of class material to prove an understanding and allow you to really focus in class and pick up better what you aren't understanding. Once you understand what you don't understand your revision and independent learning will improve rapidly.
If you are someone who maths does not come easy to you, we will find those topics that motivate you as well as your interests. By tying maths to something you are interested in, hopefully it will help provide motivation to independently revise it. We will also go for the "prong" approach. By learning a few topics hard up to a high level and ensuring a basic understanding of all the topics, if a panic happens in an exam those firm topics should help calm those nerves but also provide a bit of a buffer for those less sure and tricky topics.
And if you are not going for GCSEs, but are perhaps a little younger, I will use resources and real world applications to help anchor learning for long term use. Whether that's the fraction of green smarties in a tube or the 5 times table using analogue clocks, this allows the student to do "camouflage" learning and practice the skill without even realising it.
