About Duncan

I am a full-time tutor with over 10 years experience teaching. I specialise in:
• GCSE Maths & Further Maths
• GCSE Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Combined Science
• A-Level Maths

I teach all exam boards - Edexcel, AQA and OCR are the most common but I also have experience with the Welsh, Scottish and US curricula.

I have an honours degree in Physics from the University of Glasgow, as well as three years of voice and acting training. It's an unusual combination, but means I have an in-depth knowledge of my academic subjects alongside the communication and listening skills that are so important in the creative fields. Together this has given me a unique set of skills that combine brilliantly for effective tutoring.

I have a real passion for finding engaging, productive ways to teach and over the years have had students with various requirements. I have a proven track record of success and work with a small roster of pupils, mostly of high school age.

My Educational Background:
• University of Glasgow - Physics [BSc (HONS)]
• Langside College - Acting & Performance [Higher National Diploma]

Thurso High School (SQA Highers / A Levels):
• Physics [A]
• Maths [A]
• Chemistry [A]
• French [A]
• Computing [A]
• English [B]

Prizes and Scholarships:
In my penultimate year at high school, I was one of the recipients of a private bursary awarded to the top three students of the academic year in the Highlands & Islands region.

Other Qualifications:
• Workshop leader in NHS funded school workshops to develop and improve communication skills, and raise awareness of health issues (12-14 year olds)
• Support worker for weekend workshops (with 15-17 year olds) on performance and writing skills
• Assistant co-ordinator for open days at University of Glasgow, speaking to parents and prospective students about the degree course in Physics and arranging "fun-day" activities

I pride myself on being friendly and approachable as a tutor, creating a relaxed atmosphere to encourage discussion and questions. I find this environment leads to a much better understanding of the course material and also gives my students a real confidence in what they are learning. Exam technique is built in to my lessons from the very beginning, because ultimately this is the end point we are driving towards.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

At school I loved Maths and Sciences… it's mostly problem-solving, and feels a bit like playing a game. Sometimes I love nothing more than to print off a past paper and sit down to see how quickly I can get through it… maybe I shouldn't admit that!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Unfortunately there are a few boring bits we all just need to memorise, but once those are locked in place it's really fun to use them as tools to tackle problems in the infinite contexts that can crop up in an exam.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My high school Maths teacher, Mrs Flavell, was a great inspiration. She made the subject fun and she connected with her classes in a very engaging way. There was no talking down to us, but instead it felt like we were on the learning journey together.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Apart from knowing the course content, it's really important to be both a good listener and perceptive as it's vital to be able to detect if students are processing and understanding the information, and to pick up on when something needs a bit more repetition to really lock it in. Clear communication is key, and also a good sense of humour so that we can tackle the material together with a realistic goal in mind. Ultimately most of my students are driving towards some kind of exam (GCSE or A-Level) so my years of experience mean I know which topics and skills are examined without fail as well as where the big marks are likely to appear. Once we've got a solid foundation in those we can move onto the less common sections. A really good understanding of exam technique means getting the most out of what a student knows.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I always thought it was strange at school that people were generally filtered into the "creative" or "academic" sides, as if there is no overlap. I've always been interested in both and think of myself as a highly creative person. One side could barely exist without the other… problem solving requires creativity and most creative fields rely on technology so I think more people should be proud to be both and not let themselves be pigeonholed as one or the other.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I was never very good at blindly memorising facts, instead I need to understand why something is true, or why a certain technique works. I try to instil this in my pupils because once something is understood it is nearly impossible to forget it. But learning a page of facts with no understanding is both boring and likely to lead to forgetfulness!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love witnessing those "click" moments, when a student has struggled with a technique or sub-topic and it suddenly falls into place. It's a joy to see!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I think my bizarre combination of higher education - I have both a Physics degree and a diploma in Acting and Voice! The first thing they tell you at acting school is that performance is all about communication… and I think tutoring is exactly the same!
