What have you learned from studying biology that can benefit someone who hasn't studied biology?
I think one of the most important things you learn after studying biology is being able to appreciate how complex and beautiful life on earth is. From intricate coral reefs in the deep sea (1,000m deep) to the small ribosomes translating our mRNA into proteins; biology is a vast subject that anyone can find interest in. You also are able to appreciate how life on Earth has evolved (and continues to evolve) to create some absolutely immaculate organisms.
Additionally, I think one thing that biology has taught me is that humans really aren’t as special as we think we are. We are destructive, ignorant, and imperfect beings who tend to take what we have for granite. Humans are no different than other creatures on earth; we are made of the same chemicals, systems, etc., we just happened to evolve to be the most complex organism on the planet.
Furthermore, another benefit studying biology has given me, is understanding the balance of life. How energy is not created nor destroyed. When we die, we don’t go into heaven or hell, our bodies decompose in the ground and organisms feed upon us, converting our energy into usable resources for plants, thus adding to the cycle of life. This balance, to me, is more spiritual and beautiful than any type of afterlife. When we die, we are helping other organisms live. It’s very humbling.
Biology is amazing subject that I believe everyone should have some type of experience with. In your downtime, I suggest watching documentaries, reading articles, etc., so you too can appreciate the beauty and complexity of biology.
