Let me give you an example: the concept of hearing vs listening for increased comprehension.

Several years ago, using a mix of methods and techniques inspired by innovative langage teachers and renowned psychologists in learning such as John Rassias, Albert Bandura, Lev Vygotsky and Abraham Maslow, I created a detailed sequence of five tasks, each carefully designed to work five different facets of hearing, replicating the different ways we hear in day to day life as a native speaker and the way the brain receives, processes and interprets sound. In the course of a single 90 minute class, not only did the average comprehension level consistently rise from an average of 30 % at the start to over 80 % at the end – across all ability levels, but that class alone opened students minds to the power of hearing in learning.

Numerous students were inspired to listen to English every day. One student did this for several hours every single day, despite the constraints and demands of a high calibre job. The result ? In under six months, he went from barely following and understanding frequent work meetings in English to fully understanding everything and knowing exactly when to intervene and participate. And all this without hours of studying more grammar or learning new vocabulary.

This is not a unique case but results that repeat themselves time and time again. Students are engaged in the learning process, fully implicated at each instant of the class, without the highs and lows and moments of inattention which come from more traditional learning methods. Knowledge is transformed in use, during the class and continuing outside. These are the results I want to help you achieve.

I’m Ruth and I’ve been working in language training, conception and design for more than 15 years, on a corporate, individual and academic level.

From the very start my focus has been on making language accessible and usable to the people I work with. It is one thing to know something, it is another thing to be able to use that knowledge spontaneously and intuitively.

Many people come to me having learnt a language in school and having followed extensive trainings and classes to improve their language skills and yet are unable to hold the simplest of conversations in their target language.

This is where my courses stand out clearly from the competition. Instead of just adding more knowledge, often things which have already been learnt many times over, I help each client to build the skills needed to access their existing knowledge and to put it where their mouth is.

Through the years I have worked on, developed and refined several innovative methods and techniques based on the way the brain processes language and the psychology behind adult learning behaviour.

My courses are designed to create a learning environment where learning walks out of the classroom door with the student and naturally continues into their daily activities.
