About Olivia

Hi! I’m Olivia, a Biological Science student at the University of Guelph with a passion for working with children and helping others learn.

I have several years of experience working with children in teaching and supportive environments, particularly through gymnastics coaching. As a coach, I work with children of different ages and abilities, teaching new skills, providing encouragement, and adapting my approach when a child needs something explained or demonstrated differently. I have also volunteered in an elementary school classroom, which has given me additional experience supporting young students in an academic environment.

As a university science student, I have taken courses across biology, chemistry, environmental science, geography, statistics, and other subjects. I understand that school can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when a concept just isn’t clicking. I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and telling me when they don’t understand something. There is never any judgment—we can slow down, go back, and find another way to approach it.

I am patient, dependable, organized, and genuinely enjoy helping students build confidence in themselves. My goal is not only to help students improve academically, but also to make learning feel a little less stressful and a lot more manageable.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is patient, encouraging, and tailored to each student’s individual learning style. I believe that every student learns differently, so I like to first understand what they are struggling with and how they learn best. From there, I can explain concepts in different ways, use examples, break larger problems into smaller steps, and give students opportunities to work through questions independently with support when needed.

A typical lesson would begin with a quick check-in to see what the student is currently working on in class and identify any concepts or assignments they are having difficulty with. We would then review the material together, focusing on understanding the concept rather than simply memorizing an answer. I like to use practice questions, examples, diagrams, and real-life connections when appropriate. Toward the end of the lesson, I would have the student try problems or explain concepts back to me independently so I can make sure they feel confident before moving on.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my experience teaching and working with children. As a gymnastics coach, I have learned how to explain skills in multiple ways, recognize when a student needs a different approach, and create a positive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. I am encouraging and patient, but I also want students to develop independence and confidence in their own abilities.

I am currently a Biological Science student at the University of Guelph and am especially comfortable tutoring science and biology-related subjects. I am also happy to work with elementary and high school students who need support with general science, biology, homework, study skills, organization, or test preparation. My goal is to make lessons supportive and engaging while helping each student build both their understanding of the material and their confidence as a learner.
