About Melanie
I am a private music instructor, musician, and formerly, a pre-k and early elementary age teacher. I have been teaching music for 5 years to students ages 3-80, and from beginner to advanced levels. I studied Music Education and piano for 3 years at College of Lake County and Trinity International University. I currently teach for a music studio in the suburbs of Chicago. In addition, I have been running my own private studio for 5 years. From 2016-2017, I taught music, art, and served as an assistant classroom teacher at a private school for Pre-K through 1st grade typical learning and special needs students. I have current CPR and various classroom safety certifications as well as some formal and informal training for non-typical learners. Prior to that, I worked for another music studio in addition to tutoring.

I consider my teaching method to be traditional, yet creative and unique to the individual student, since each student's goals and learning styles are unique. I seek to make music fun and practical to students while still teaching them the fundamentals of music theory, technique, and history.
I strongly emphasize theory and music reading. Each of my students must be proficient in reading staff music, as well as understanding the fundamentals of music. However, I also emphasize that music is fun, creative, and a form of expression and communication. Therefore, in addition to their main repertoire, lessons with my students usually involve them playing a board game relating to a specific theory concept, learning ear-training through a student's Spotify playlist, or writing their own song to learn rhythm and pitch.
