About Mitchell Quinn
I am an American who has traveled the world teaching in a wide variety of different places over the last 8 years. I did not follow the traditional university pathway as I wanted to get out and see the world while gathering experience. I instead attended an online university while teaching ESL. After gaining some experience and proving myself as a competent teacher I was able to start working in International schools focusing on my subject, International Studies and Environmental Science, rather than on ELS.
All throughout this time, I have also tutored on the side and conducted online classes over the summer and particularly during the Covid period.
I have lived in Sri Lanka, Spain, Albania and Kyrgyzstan. The reason I am setting up a permanent online classroom presence is that I would like to travel more and have a bit more freedom with where I am living.

My experience with the international school system, specifically QSI, has introduced me to the Mastery Learning Method. I typically implement this method into all of my courses.
In short, this means that the student will not move on to more advanced materials until the previously learned concepts are fully understood and able to be produced in an uncontrolled environment.
Lessons also do not focus on the teacher presenting information as much as instead, the student inquiring about the topics being learned by asking questions and using critical thinking. An example of this would be rather than the teacher giving a lecture; I would present information through an activity such as a game or interactive website and then have the student show what was learned through a project.
Every lesson which is presented includes the following:
- TSW, The Student Will. The goal of the lesson. The student is introduced to it at the start so they know what they should learn.
-DI, Direct Instruction. The activity or method of teaching. This is what the student actually will do during the lesson, PowerPoint, videos, games, books, etc...
-SW, Student Work. Guided activities and exercises to make sure the student understands what is being taught.
-PoM, Proof of Mastery. A work that the student creates which proves that they have the ability to produce and use the concept being taught. Always a creative work rather than guided by the teacher.
Once a student has mastered a topic by completing a quality Proof of Mastery, then we would move on to the next section.
