About Em
I have been playing clarinet since I was 7 years old, and have been a performing musician since I was 12. I live and breathe music, and recently graduated with a degree in folk and traditional music from Newcastle university. My favourite kind of music to play is folk music for dance, particularly in the European balfolk scenes. I have detailed knowledge and experience in traditional repertoire from England, France, Brittany, and Scandinavia, as well as a passion for classic and jazz clarinet repertoire.
I currently perform in a variety of live contexts, most notably in the Eurofolk band Hearken Quartet, and Newcastle based ceilidh band DIY Ceilidh.

No matter your end goal, we will work together to develop your playing as a whole, focusing on musicality, learning by ear, building your playing style and technique, and learning improvisational skills. You will improve your flexibility as a musician, and I will help you to develop important adjacent skills such as how to practice effectively and how to look after your clarinet (and yourself) when playing regularly.
My teaching style is well-suited to those who may not be inclined towards doing grade exams, however I am very happy to work on exam content with students, and approach grades as milestones.
