About George
I have just finished a BSc in Neuroscience at Cardiff University, a degree built on exactly the material students meet at GCSE and A Level: cell biology, biochemistry, enzyme kinetics, organic structures and functional groups, membrane transport, receptor pharmacology, genetics and inheritance. Everything on those specifications is something I have gone on to study in more depth, so when a student asks why a reaction goes that way or what a process is actually for, I can answer rather than repeat the textbook line.
I have also spent time in labs doing the practical side, including gel electrophoresis for a study on congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which covers a good deal of the required practical and data analysis content that students tend to lose marks on.
Before and during my degree I worked as a healthcare assistant in a GP surgery and volunteered at a homeless shelter, which is where I learned to explain things clearly to people without a science background.

About my lessons
My lessons are built around the idea that science makes sense once you can see why the answer has to be that answer, rather than simply that it is. I teach GCSE and A Level Biology and Chemistry online, working from the specification your exam board actually uses, and I structure sessions around a mix of content, worked past paper questions and mark scheme technique, because knowing the material and knowing how to be awarded marks for it are two different skills.
I have worked with a wide range of people, including as a healthcare assistant in a GP surgery and as a volunteer in a homeless shelter, and that has taught me to read where someone is and adjust rather than deliver the same explanation to everyone. Some students want to be walked through slowly; others want to be pushed. Both are fine.
I also find this material genuinely interesting. My own background is neuroscience, and chemistry is the subject I keep coming back to, so I am happy to go beyond the specification when a student is curious.
