My approach to teaching is very flexible, and I will be more than happy to vary my style to the requirements of the student.
If I am teaching a topic for the first time, I will always try to begin with how the topic relates to the real world, and give examples. A lot of the time students think 'Why do I need to know this?', or 'What's the point of doing this?' Being able to provide a reason to learn the topics greatly improves motivation in learning in my experience. Throughout the lesson I include in-class activities to show how what I've just been teaching can be applied. These problems also act as a good way to keep the student engaged with the topic I am teaching. At the end of a lesson, I set a few quick problems similar to the in-class activities, and ask the student to prepare them for the next time so we can go through them together. At the end of teaching a topic, I will provide an extensive problem sheet on it, with questions similar to those you would find in an exam. The student can complete these in their own time and can send their answers to me, which I will constructively mark. I will then provide a set of model answers so they can learn from any mistakes they've made, and also know how a question is intended to be answered. I've always found that I learn better from making mistakes - hence I believe working through problems is incredibly beneficial for learning a topic.
