About Iris
I am studying both math and chemistry at William & Mary, a liberal arts school in Williamsburg, Virginia. I wouldn't be diving headfirst into STEM if it weren't for the positive experiences I've had with it in the past.
I was a leader of my high school's math team, where every week I presented a lesson that I had prepared and assigned problems that I had created. I certainly learned a lot, yet I still have so much room to grow!
Now, my extracurricular learning consists of working in a chemistry lab, where I am helping to conduct research on how chemical reactions with unnatural amino acids could help other scientists develop less invasive chemotherapeutics.
I jump at any opportunity to help my peers, and myself, learn something new.

Like many students, I was taught rules like, "it matters not the reason why, just invert and multiply," when learning things like fractions.
As someone who could be described as a "questioner," I found that approach endlessly frustrating. I definitely learn best by understanding concepts, not by memorizing procedures.
I have taken my learning experience and applied it to the philosophy I bring to tutoring. Rather than walking you through the problem, I want us to discuss and discover solutions together while building confidence and intuition so that you can tackle problems independently.
Of course, understanding is only part of the process; practice is just as important. I aim to spend the majority of our time working through problems in order to reinforce concepts and apply what you've learned.
I tutor all middle and high school math, including Calculus, as well as all high school chemistry topics.

Iris is my older sister and I can confidently say she is the best teacher I know. She is quick to answer any of my clarifying questions and is patient when I am struggling. In all subjects during middle school and high school, Iris has been a go to source of mine when I have questions or just need help. She explains things very clearly and is extremely encouraging. When I succeed or have moments of success, Iris is just as excited as I am.
