About Abby
Hello! I’m Abby, an educator and artist with over 10 years of experience teaching in NYC schools across a wide range of age levels, as well as working with individual students of all ages, preschool through adult. I have a BFA in Studio Art and an MA in Art Education from NYU with a professional art teacher certification.
I love helping people of all ages build confidence in their artmaking. As a tutor, I focus on each student’s needs, strengths, and interests. I tailor lessons to meet students’ goals, and shape sessions to encourage artistic growth and confidence. I believe the artistic process should be fun and engaging no matter the student’s age or starting skillset, and always encourage students to stretch beyond what they think they can accomplish. It’s always possible with time and practice!
My background includes drawing, painting, and collage, with extensive experience in portraiture. I’ve also created interactive installations, including work shown at the Figment Art Festival. My personal work recently has involved exploring printmaking and layered mixed media on found materials such as old book pages. I believe teaching requires continued learning and exploration, and would never ask of my students anything I’m not practicing myself.
When working with adults, lessons often center on strengthening technique, developing a more intentional art practice, and making space for experimentation. Whether this is your first time exploring visual art or you’re returning to art after time away, I’m here to meet you where you’re at.
I enjoy helping teens hone technical skills, help find and embrace an artistic voice, improve confidence, and build a portfolio for art school--whether that's a specialized high school or middle school, or applying at a college level.
I’m passionate about social emotional learning (SEL), which I regularly incorporate in my work with children. All kids can benefit from SEL! I also have experience working with students with disabilities, including autism. My work in special education settings has allowed me to specialize in creating inclusive, accessible lessons.
I’d love to connect and see how I can support you or your child’s creative goals!

Lessons are process-based and student-driven, shaped around each learner’s interests, goals, and current skill level. This might mean building foundational skills, improving technique, exploring new approaches, or growing confidence in artmaking. I work with children, teens, and adults at all levels, from beginners to advanced students, fostering an encouraging and warm space for students to express themselves freely.
While I come prepared, sessions are flexible and collaborative. A typical lesson may include skill-building exercises, guided practice, creative exploration, feedback, and time to reflect. Projects are often carried over between sessions for all ages to strengthen skills and develop a more sustained practice, though one-off projects are also an option.
-For children, social emotional learning can be incorporated through art in ways that feel natural and supportive. The creative process and self-expression offer opportunities to increase emotional awareness, problem-solving, confidence-building, frustration tolerance, self-empowerment, and more. Specific areas of focus can also be tailored to each student when helpful.
-For teens and adults, lessons often emphasize technique, project planning, embracing an individual style, and working through creative blocks. Returning to art after time away and cultivating a more intentional, ongoing art practice may also be part of the process. We can work on anything from realistic portraiture to abstract experimentation. Sessions can be structured or open-ended, depending on individual preferences.
Additionally, support is available for portfolio development and art school applications.
