About Matthew
Hi, I’m Matthew Lopez! I’m a certified Arizona high school math teacher with more than 10 years of experience helping students build confidence, improve their skills, and succeed in math. My journey as a tutor actually began during my college years when I worked with students in the Upward Bound program, helping prepare them for college and academic success. Since then, I’ve worked with students from many different backgrounds and skill levels, from those who struggle with math anxiety to those aiming for top grades in advanced courses.
I believe math becomes much easier when students feel supported, understood, and comfortable asking questions. My teaching style is patient, encouraging, and interactive because I know that every student learns differently. One of my favorite parts of teaching is helping students reach that “lightbulb” moment when a concept finally clicks and they realize they are capable of more than they thought. In my lessons, I focus on breaking down difficult concepts into manageable steps while helping students understand the “why” behind the math, not just memorize formulas.
A typical session includes guided examples, practice problems, visual explanations, and real-time feedback tailored to the student’s needs and pace. I also work to create a relaxed and positive learning environment where students can build confidence while improving academically.
What sets me apart is my combination of classroom teaching experience, tutoring experience, and educational leadership experience. As both a teacher and former school leader, I understand how to adapt instruction to different learning styles and help students stay motivated. I pride myself on being professional, dependable, and approachable while keeping lessons engaging and encouraging.
I work with middle school, high school, and introductory college-level students in subjects such as Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, and general math support. Whether you need help preparing for a test, catching up in class, strengthening foundational skills, or pushing yourself to the next level, I’m excited to help you succeed and make math feel far less intimidating along the way.

My approach as a tutor is centered around building confidence, creating understanding step-by-step, and helping students reach the “lightbulb” moment where math finally clicks. I believe that every student can succeed in math with the right support, patience, and explanations tailored to their learning style. Rather than simply giving answers, I focus on helping students understand the “why” behind the process so they can solve problems independently and feel more confident in class and on exams.
A typical lesson begins with identifying my student’s current understanding and areas of difficulty. From there, lessons include guided examples, interactive problem solving, visual explanations, and real-time feedback. I break complex concepts into manageable steps and adjust instruction based on the student’s pace and needs. Sessions often end with independent practice and a quick review to reinforce understanding and measure growth.
What sets me apart is my combination of classroom experience, leadership experience, and years of tutoring students from diverse academic backgrounds. I've worked with struggling learners, honors students, and college-bound students for over a decade as a certified Arizona high school math teacher. Before teaching professionally, I tutored students through the Upward Bound program during college, helping students strengthen their academic skills and prepare for higher education. My experience allows me to connect with students at different levels and explain difficult concepts in approachable ways.
