Cell division, a crucial biological process, ensures the growth, repair, and reproduction of living organisms. It encompasses interphase, where the cell prepares for division by duplicating its DNA. Following interphase, mitosis occurs, involving prophase (chromosomes condense), metaphase (chromosomes align at the cell's equator), anaphase (chromatids separate and move to opposite poles), and telophase (chromosomes decondense, nuclei form). Cytokinesis, the division of the cytoplasm, then completes the process, resulting in two genetically identical daughter cells. Mitosis maintains genetic continuity, essential for normal cell function and tissue growth. However, abnormalities in cell division regulation can lead to diseases like cancer, where cells divide uncontrollably. Understanding cell division mechanisms is crucial for various fields, from developmental biology to medicine, as it underpins both normal physiology and pathological conditions, offering insights into potential therapeutic interventions and treatments for diseases associated with cell division dysregulation.
