About Orla
I'm a Biology undergraduate at Brown University, one of the world's leading Ivy League institutions, with a genuine passion for making science make sense. Having completed NCEA Levels 1–3 with Excellence and Merit endorsements myself, I understand exactly what New Zealand students need to succeed in their exams.
Alongside my studies, I compete as an Under-23 level rower in New Zealand and division 1 rower in the US, which has taught me strong time-management and discipline, skills I bring into how I structure and prioritize every lesson.
I'm currently completing my degree in the US before returning to New Zealand to pursue further study in a clinical field such as medicine or dentistry, so I'm well placed to guide students who share similar academic goals. I believe the best learning happens through clear visual explanations and active discussion, and I'm committed to helping every student build genuine understanding, not just memorized answers.

My approach to tutoring and teaching:
I believe biology really clicks when you can see it, not just memorize it. My teaching style centers on breaking complex concepts down into clear, visual explanations — diagrams, flowcharts, and step-by-step drawings that show how processes actually work (think: photosynthesis pathways, genetic crosses, or the stages of mitosis). I find that once a student can draw a concept out and explain it back in their own words, they've moved from memorization to real understanding, which is what carries them through exam-style questions and unfamiliar contexts.
Lessons are interactive rather than lecture-style: I'll walk through a concept visually, then get you to try explaining or drawing it yourself so we can spot and fix any gaps together. I also work through past NCEA-style questions to connect the theory to how it's actually assessed.
Lesson length: Typically 30–60 minutes, depending on the topic and how much practice we need to cover.
My background: I completed NCEA Levels 1, 2, and 3 with Excellence and Merit endorsements, and I'm currently a Biology undergraduate at Brown University (Ivy League, USA). This means I know the NCEA syllabus and assessment style firsthand, plus I bring a strong, up-to-date grounding in biology from my university studies. My particular strengths are in cellular biology and genetics, but I'm comfortable teaching across the full biology curriculum — from ecology and evolution to human biology and biochemistry.
Who I teach: Years 9–13 students (roughly ages 13–18), including NCEA Levels 1–3 Biology. I can help with everything from foundational science concepts in junior years to exam preparation and achievement/excellence-level questions in senior Biology.
