About Mariela
What sets me apart from other tutors?
- I am a Native Speaker.
- Want to improve your accent? As an actress, I receive quality training in accent work, including IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) fluency.
- I completed a 168-hour Level 5 TEFL course, a more in-depth training program than the standard 120-hour course. My program is one of the most accredited, having received accreditation from the British Accreditation Council and the ODLQC, among others.
- I have been awarded for my reading, writing (poetry and essays), and presentations. I'm also an Honors College student.
- As a BFA Acting major at the renowned Pace School of Performing Arts in NYC, I understand how to explore storytelling (plot, characters, story structure, symbolism, writing that compels, etc.) in a more engaging and effective manner than most tutors. My students' reading comprehension quickly improves, as do their writing and public speaking abilities. Reading becomes FUN!
- Teaching is my #1 passion, and I am constantly conversing with other teachers and English pedagogues to discuss teaching strategies and linguistic research. Recently, I took a university Research Methods in Language and Linguistics course tailored toward ESL professors. In that class, I continued to study current and historical language teaching theories, challenges for learners, and academia about code-switching.
- I have several years of experience teaching children. I believe in clear and open communication with parents/guardians and am always happy to schedule a call or email to discuss your child's progress.

During our first lesson, we'll discuss your goals and challenges. We'll also do some sample testing to further assess your strengths and weaknesses.
Please feel free to send me 1-3 writing samples via email prior to our first lesson. This is OPTIONAL but encouraged for intermediate and advanced students interested in writing tutoring.
