About Barbara

I have four graduate degrees: MAs in English, Theology, General Psychology and an MS in Clinical Psychology. As a graduate assistant and private tutor, I tutored graduate and undergraduate students in writing papers for class and dissertations following APA and MLA styles both on the ground and online. I also have tutored elementary home-school students in English and math skills development. Utilizing my psychology and educational background, I know how to lessen writing anxiety.

About the lesson

I have MAs degrees in English and Psychology which have helped me become an effective writing tutor. As a part of my graduate study, I have also taken courses, including Teaching Writing, toward my MA in English Education. I have found from tutoring students starting at age 10 through graduate school, that many people who have difficulty writing also have a strong fear of it. I find that once I am able to get students to overcome their fear of writing, their writing improves dramatically. To help students overcome their fear, I use the free-writing approach and add other components of writing such as organization, spelling, grammar, syntax and style after the students have written their ideas on paper in this free-flowing style. I encourage students to have fun writing and to view writing as a form of communication and not as an artificial assignment that they have to complete following certain requirements. To this end, I give students much positive reinforcement and offer constructive criticism which they can follow without much effort. An unique part of my teaching approach is that I use text-to-speech software programs so that students can read and listen to their writing simultaneously. In addition, I help students use the Internet to find answers to their writing questions. Through my teaching methods and collaboration, I aim to help students become independent and comfortable writers.
