About Mary
I am a current junior at Emory University on track to major in English: Creative Writing and Political Science. My tutoring experience goes back to high school when I served as an in-class tutor in Honors English and Spanish II. Since then, I have worked as a private summer tutor for k-8 students dealing with issues ranging from low academic confidence to dyslexia and dysgraphia. In college, I was selected by a professor in the Women and Gender Studies department to assist students both in group and one-on-one settings in a writing intensive class focused on race and socio-economic conditions. In addition, for the past three years, I have been conferencing and editing college admissions essays for high school seniors. Living close to Atlanta has allowed me to attend many admissions workshops by top schools including Dartmouth, Penn, Notre Dame, and Brown. I am a fine-tuned copy editor with a good sense for the kind of essays that stand out in the admissions process.

Writing is an crucial skill in any field. No matter what you do, you have to be able to communicate to others why it matters. I approach my writing lessons by finding out how writing applies to your interests. For k-8 students I like to structure each lesson around a topic and, from there, explore the different ways writing helps us to understand it. For example, I once did a lesson with a third grader with an interest in science on the brain. We read an non-fiction article about a scientist who studies the brain, a science-fiction story about the way people imagine the brain, and a poem about the mental process of an artist. I like to spend the last portion of each session with a writing assignment based on what the student finds most thought-provoking in the readings. I always teach with a mind for the long term. The most important thing is that the student develops a curiosity and love for learning that will drive them to wherever their potential goes. I know what it's like to feel discouraged in school, but I've also discovered the incredible places passion and work can take you. In every situation, I bring energy and encouragement and I hope it translates into the motivation you need to achieve.
