About Julie
I have nine years teaching experience (Primary) plus several years supporting learning in schools prior to gaining QTS. I hold a First Class Hons Degree, PGCE, DipRS plus a TEFL certificate.
As a private tutor, I have worked with students aged 5-30 years. I enjoy working with students of all ages in order to build their confidence and secure a solid foundation on which to build and develop further learning skills. This is done through addressing gaps in learning and correcting misconceptions; helping students to improve their literacy skills, which includes handwriting, grammar, phonics and spellings, as well as developing comprehension skills and strategies. In maths, I focus on improving skills and confidence in order to apply them to real-life everyday situations (Functional Skills). For 11+ students I focus on the knowledge and skills needed, as well as exam technique and practice.
As a former SATS Marker (KS2 Reading) which I did for three years, I acquired a deeper understanding of the process and am able to support students to developing their responses to comprehension questions.
I also am keen to help those for whom English is an additonal language to become more confident and fluent speakers and develop their reading/writing skills.

Sessions are tailor-made to meet each student's needs (e.g. pace, learning style, areas for learning that require attention etc). A relaxed approach with a sense of humour enables students to develop both skills and confidence.
I mainly focus on KS1 and KS2 level of skills and knowlege because if the fundamental skills are not secure this can impact on further learning. Therefore the age of the student is irrelevant - what is important is identifying where the student is and building on their prior learning in order to create a secure foundation on which to build. This may progress to Functional Skills level and some aspects of GCSE, although I do not provide discrete tuition for the GCSE or Functional Skills syllabuses.
