About Evelyn
I am very much one that saw first hand how once you are in Chile, or other Latin American countries. That if you do not have a basic understanding of the native language you will find it difficult to get around. For there is hardly much English spoken at cafes/restaurants and other establishments. But I think if you have a good basic to advanced level you will enjoy your holiday much more and it is a beautiful country to travel to. I think eventually I would love to work for a tour group where I can travel with the Aussies and be proud of how well they are going getting their food order right as opposed to tragically not knowing what they are about to eat.

My lessons in Spanish have all been to students who had no real understanding on the language itself. I would use the books which were for primary school level. Which for a foreigner landing in Chile or south America for the first time, a basic way to get around with your dictionary but these days there are phone apps which can assist you. But i always allowed the pupil to spell the word in their own way of how they would pronounce it, by having this in brackets under the word. It allows each pupil to feel confident that by the way they wrote it down they can say that word until they are confident enough to not even look at their book. Students were then taken to a shop where we had to communicate in spanish and we would go to a spanish shop where things were in spanish. The shop owners were always happy to chat to us in spanish to assist in their óral test' and it really did help them. We would also watch documentaries on Chile where they would travel to different regions and it was evident on how the language was different to how they would speak in the capital. So they learnt to listen and speak slowly to be understood, that would be great help . Then I would organise an day or afternoon for the students to meet up in the tea room and chat only in spanish together. One was to make the teas and coffees and the orders were said and noted in spanish. Then the next student would have to reverse the role.
