About Jonathon Dean
I am a Virology PhD student with an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry. I am also a keen science communicator and run a podcast called "Science after Sunset".
I have over 3 years experience of teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students in either a 1-on-1 setting or in groups as large as 12:
"Dean's guidance in my dissertation was paramount. His ability to clearly articulate scientific language and structure a research project was most helpful" - Ryan Scollan, 1st Class Honours in Sport & Exercise Science, Loughborough University
"I enjoyed my lab sessions with Dean as my demonstrator. He was very easy to get along with and skilled at explaining difficult concepts" - Casey Neill, 2nd Year Biochemistry Student, QUB.

Whilst my expertise is in virology and infectious diseases, I am an enthusiastic tutor of microbiology and biological science. As such I am open to tutoring students through their Biology GCSE, AS, or A Levels, as well as those completing their undergraduate degrees in biological science, microbiology, or biochemistry.
My least favourite lectures at University were the one's in which the lecturer would stand and read line after line of text off a powerpoint slide. After making it through several lectures of this type I decided the best methods of learning are be visual, interactive, and engaging. This is precisely what I strive for in my classes.
For example, in our lab we often hold presentation skills workshops. Instead of reading off a list of do's and don'ts for public speaking, we have our junior students stand up and actually present their work. Afterwards we provide them with useful feedback on what they did well and perhaps areas they can improve.
Unlike the stereotype given to many scientists, I am a firm believer that less jargon is better. That is why when I'm teaching I place special focus on making scientific concepts both simple and concise. Science is for everyone and when taught correctly it's great fun!

Jonathon Dean would be an excellent tutor because he is extremely passionate about his subject and loves communicating science to as many people as possible. His podcast is a testament to how dedicated he is in teaching people about something he is extremely knowledgable about. He is also a thoughtful and patient individual who would take the necessary time to ensure his students understood their tasks and problems, and would be excellent at helping students reach their potential.
Dean is extremely talented person in the field of biology. He has a great balance of literal knowledge and practical skills in this subject, so I think he will be amazing at both teaching and demonstrating. He is also very good at explaining things clearly, concisely, and in logical manner. He is very patient and never looses his calm under pressure.
Dean has been formally and informally tutoring me for the last year. He is an excellent communicator who breaks down difficult concepts into fun and easy to understand descriptions. His enthusiasm is unrivalled and his willingness to help is incredible.
Dean is a enthusiastic scientist which really shines through during his lessons. He is very capable of explaining difficult concepts in an easy to understand way. His informal style of teaching makes for very relaxed but effective lessons. Like the Bill Nye of Bangor.
I had no lab experience prior to meeting Dean. I was quite unsure about how to carry out experiments but he always had time to guide me and help me whenever I needed it, despite the fact he wasn't my supervisor. His assistance extended from the lab and I am so appreciative that he always available to talk to and give insight. He is beyond approachable and has an infectious passion for science. Dean is an organised and trustworthy tutor that will always provide real support!
