About Peter

I have been teaching the violin for the last 35 years, in my own private practice, in the Junior Departments of the Royal Northern College of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire, in Napier, Edinburgh and Newcastle Universities (where I was Head of Strings) and in various schools. I have also been involved in educational outreach projects for various orchestras (including workshops in schools in Hong Kong and Japan), coached orchestras at Durham University and KES Edgbaston. Many of my pupils have been very successful in Associated Board exams (one received the highest mark given in ABRSM Grade 8), been members of the National Youth Orchestra and gone on to study at music conservatoires. Aside from my passionate commitment to teaching, I have performed for the last 40 years as an orchestral violinist in most of the UK orchestras, touring the UK and throughout the world mostly as leader of the second violin sections of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. I am also a keen Chamber Musician, performing on BBC Radio, TV and touring internationally, performing as a member of the SCO String Quartet, the Leda Piano Trio and alongside artists such as the Endellion Quartet, Peter Donohoe, Stephen Bishop Kovacevich and Michael Collins.

About the lesson

Hello! I am a highly experienced violin teacher based in Bromsgrove offering lessons at my home and online to players of all ages and of abilities, from beginners up to conservatoire level students seeking orchestral audition advice. My lessons can be 30, 45 mins or an hour, depending on the level and age of the pupil, and I aim to make learning the violin a fun, inspiring and exciting journey!

Peter is an outstanding violinist, and he is also an experienced, patient, and unique violin educator. My daughter got the diploma violin playing qualification from him. We are very grateful and recognize Peter for all his efforts. If you are still thinking about finding an excellent violin teacher, then Peter must be the best choice.

Peter is a superb violin teacher and thoroughly inspiring player. After doing all my grades at school and then taking a break from playing after university, I decided to pick up my fiddle again and seek some further tuition. Peter helped me to continue from where I left off; improving my technique and exploring areas of the repertoire that I would find enjoyable. Peter is calm and patient and in my case is guided by you in terms of the speed at which you learn. Lessons with Peter are fun and you leave them feeling motivated to practice and improve your playing further.

Peter has taught my daughters violin for the last 7 years. He has instilled in them a love for the instrument. He is a brilliant teacher, always believing the best in his students and encouraging them. He works with each student to help them reach their potential. Both girls are now working on post grade 8 repertoire. He carefully selects music for each of them that suits them but also stretches them.
