About Jessica
Hi! My name is Jessica, and I have been teaching students how to read since I was in high school. When I was 6, I was diagnosed with a severe form of Dyslexia, and received tutoring to help me learn to read. That experience made me want to become a teacher so that I could pass on my learning. In high school I worked in a program in which I and my friends went to a local elementary school and worked with students who struggled with reading. This experience showed me that teaching was definitely what I wanted to do. I went to college and became a general and special education teacher, and taught in various classrooms for 12 years. My husband is in the military, so we moved around a lot, but that meant that I got to experience teaching in both elementary schools and a high school. Now, I homeschool my own 2 boys (who are currently 11 and 7) and I work with students who struggle with their reading and writing skills. My specialty is taking students in upper elementary through high school who are below grade level in reading and writing and bringing them up to and often above grade level quickly and efficiently. I look forward to meeting and working with many amazing students in the future!

I believe that all students can read and write on grade level, if taught the skills they need.
A typical lesson is about 30 minutes long, starting with quick fluency review based on students learned skills, a short lesson on a new topic, and then practice on that topic so that the student gains confidence. Finally, we apply the learned topic to either a short reading or writing activity to reenforce to the student that they can now use this skill on their own on their schoolwork or in their daily lives.
