About Matt

I am a second year medical student at the University of Oxford with over a year of tutoring experience. My time at Oxford has no doubt influenced my teaching style, as through the Oxbridge tutorial system I have become increasingly aware of the value of challenging, interactive lessons for individual learning. I am already seeing big improvements in my tutees' understanding of biology, where not only have their exam scores improved, but also their fundamental understanding of biological principles. By applying my ethos of building understanding, not just memorising facts, to my own studies, I was able to score in the top 10% of my cohort in my first year of university, demonstrating the importance of this study technique.
However, simply understanding content is pointless for tuition if one is unable to communicate it. In the last year I have honed my ability to describe concepts and ideas to my tutees, a skill strengthened by my study of English Literature A Level. In addition to this, delivering speeches to 400+people, as well as captaining sports teams, have provided me with invaluable communication and interpersonal skills which allow me to bring clarity to explanations given in lessons.

Studying should not revolve around pure recollection of facts; rather, it should focus on building a comprehensive understanding of the core principles that govern the subject, which can then be applied to various different contexts. This is the ethos at the heart of my teaching and my own learning.

It was this attitude towards learning which enabled me to achieve eight grade 9s at GCSE level, A*A*A at A Level (A* in Biology and Chemistry), and to be offered a place at the University of Oxford to study medicine. After completing my first year on the course, I was awarded a scholarship for scoring in the top 10% of the cohort in the first year exams. This is testament to my study techniques; beginning by working to understand content, before trying to memorise all of the facts. By applying these principles to your own learning, you drastically improve your understanding and test performance, progress I've seen in my tutees over the 1+ years I've been tutoring professionally.

Lessons will last an hour and be conducted online, centred around the subject syllabus for GCSE and A Level Biology, considering content both on and off the specification to aid your understanding and memorisation of the core content. These lessons will be very interactive, where I will ask you questions on content you're unfamiliar with, and will expect you to reason with the question based on concepts you are previously familiar with. Constant application of content in this way enables you to truly understand what you're learning, and is the dominant form of teaching at Oxbridge universities through the tutorial system, of which my lessons are heavily inspired. Hence, for any biology students wishing to apply to Oxbridge for biology related courses (including medicine), my lessons will help prepare for the notorious interview, which after all is essentially a mock tutorial. My lessons are also suited to those who are intellectually curious, a valuable quality to academic institutions.

Additionally, I can provide key insights on the personal statement and MMI style medicine interviews, having been through this process myself and receiving 3 offers for UK medical schools.
