I have ample experience teaching both large and small groups of students, as well as running one-to-one guided tutorials. I am well equipped to help you improve your knowledge of the particular subject area you need help with, but also to develop your close reading and writing skills, critical thinking, argumentation and communication skills.
My teaching is oriented constructively, i.e. I will encourage you to make use of what you already know to build your own connections to new concepts and theories. This approach has proven pedagogic benefits – those who are active participants in their own learning, learn the most. I will aim to help you develop an intellectual vigilance about your own ideas and those of others. This is especially important in close readings of texts (especially philosophical ones). Focussing on critical thinking, sensitivity to nuance and pre-empting possible objections will also help you improve your writing and argumentative skills.
In the first session, we will discuss your specific learning needs – e.g. whether you need help with an assessment, or with improving your understanding of a specific text or author's position. The further sessions will then be tailored to these needs, and will be aimed at putting you in the best possible position to meet them.

Perfect! Plamen is an excellent tutor and I couldn’t recommend him more highly. He explains complex philosophical ideas in a really clear and accessible way, which has been incredibly helpful during my final year of my undergraduate degree.
He has been especially helpful with difficult topics like Heidegger, helping me to structure my thoughts and develop stronger arguments. He encourages independent thinking while also giving really useful guidance, which has made a big difference to my confidence and my work.
He is also very patient, supportive, and easy to talk to, which makes each session both productive and enjoyable. I’m really grateful for his help and would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a thoughtful and dedicated tutor.- Athena is an excellent student - she's not only really friendly, but also highly reflective about her learning needs and able to communicate them well. I would happily continue to tutor her in the future!Plamen's response :
Perfect! Great tutor to work with! I can highly recommend.
- Eline is a great student, communicative and very easy to work with - would gladly tutor her againPlamen's response :
Perfect! Plamen is an exceptionally talented philosophy teacher who is capable of systematically explaining even the most difficult areas of continental philosophy, while also illuminating basic philosophical concepts for beginners in a remarkably lucid way. He has a wide-ranging and remarkable understanding of the history of philosophy, from the ancient thinkers to contemporary debates. Moreover, he brings a unique insight that encourages you to view each thinker not in simplistic terms, but through a critical lens.
Beyond his academic strengths, Plamen is a highly approachable and friendly tutor who responds carefully to questions and keeps each session lively and enjoyable. I can confidently say that anyone seeking an introduction to philosophy or aiming to master more advanced topics will benefit immensely from his teaching.- Any tutor would be happy to have Sehwan as their student/tutee. He's very keen and knowledgeable about the subject already and is highly willing to put in the work needed to advance their learning. I would happily continue to tutor him in the future!Plamen's response :

Plamen is a colleague and friend who I have known for a few years. He always gives insightful and constructive feedback, both in person and in writing. He has a unique way of approaching every subject, and as such philosophical conversations with Plamen are incredibly rewarding. Anyone would be lucky to have Plamen as a teacher!
I have attended several classes given by Dr. Plamen and I would strongly recommend them. I have also seen the amount of research and planning he puts behind his classes which is impeccable. Plamen's classes are highly interactive and self-reflective as he has a very patient abd calm demeanor. He encourages his students to raise questions and ponders upon it with them. Other than that, I've myself noticed that he can lecture on a wide range of topics including philosophy, critical theory, politics, literature, and psychoanalysis. On top of that, even in his capacity as a researcher he has performed some outstanding work in relation to critical theory.
Plamen is so incredibly knowledgeable on a wide verity of philosophy. He can take the place of the philosopher and retell/explain their argument so well. He uses close up reading to better understand the text & to discuss very difficult subjects to understand. I so so so so would recommend working with Plamen, especially if there are incredibly complex subjects you struggle to get your head around.
Plamen has taught me during the second year of my undergraduate studies at Essex. His module in ‘Capitalism and Its Critics’ has been by far one of the most compelling I took during my time there. His ability to deliver clear and engaging lectures on highly abstract and complex topics is commendable, and has surely furthered my interest in philosophy. As well as that, his dedication to his students is impressive, personally, I have not received more support with my projects from any other tutor so far, nor have experienced such patience in answering even what were perhaps some of the more banal questions. As a student, what I have received from Plamen far exceeds the level of informational exchange, he offered me guidance, support and inspiration and if ‘above and beyond’ were to be a person, it is safe to say he’d qualify for that.
