My approach

I teach English and History the way I was trained in the US: build reading and writing endurance, then use that stamina on school work. A child who can only last two paragraphs will keep failing long papers no matter how many “model phrases” they memorize. So lessons are not a pile of short drills. We stay with a text, we write past the point where they usually stop, and we rewrite.

Personal Philosophy on Vocabulary: Vocabulary is not learned through memorization but through reading, building a healthy reading habit is vital to growth. Many Singaporean parents do not realize the value of creating the lifelong habit of reading. Most parents chase instant gratification through memorization.

How a class actually runs

Quick check of last week’s work and what school set this week.

One sustained task: a long passage or a full writing or reading stretch — 50 minutes without hopping topics.

I mark in front of them: spelling, grammar is specifically important for P1 - S1, and overall meaning, paragraph structure, word selection gets refined from S2 +

They rewrite the weak sections in the same lesson

A brief note to parents on what improved and what is next.

Techniques I use: draft → mark → rewrite; timed and untimed writing so stamina is trained on purpose; reading aloud or annotation on hard paragraphs; history as an argument paper (claim, source, so-what), not a date list. Grammar and vocabulary sit inside the writing, not as a separate worksheet unless the gap is serious.

Lesson length

Usually 1.5 hours. Primary can be 1 hour if focus drops. Exam season or a full essay draft can be 2 hours by agreement.
Qualifications and experience

BA in History and Economics, minor in Data Analytics, Rollins College (Florida), Class of 2025
University tutor / writing center, Rollins College, Nov 2021–Apr 2025: History 100–300 and Economics 100–200 (worksheets, test review, presentations)
Current tutor in Singapore (from June 2026): English, History, and chess for local and international-school students
Levels I already teach: P1, P3, P4, Secondary 1–2, Grade 8 international

Who the lessons are for

Ages about 7–16 (primary through lower/mid secondary, IB MYP / Grade 8, and IGCSE or IB English/History as they move up)
Local MOE English and international-school / expat families who want American-style writing
Students who can “do the homework” but collapse on long reading or a full composition
History students who need a thesis and evidence, not memorized notes

English is native. Mandarin is advanced if a parent wants a quick update in Chinese. Lessons are 1-to-1, at home in central Singapore or online.
