About Phoebe
Hi! I'm Phoebe, an undergraduate at the University of Oxford studying English Language and Literature. I have always been passionate about literature, and I enjoy teaching and helping others to explore and appreciate literary works in close detail.
I have a great understanding of the GCSE and A-Level curriculum, and am familiar with the AQA and Edexcel exam boards. I can also look at and offer advice on Oxbridge personal statements when needed.
My teaching approach is calm, friendly, and encouraging - I aim to inspire confidence and encourage independent thinking. I learn what skills my students want to develop and tailor my sessions around these, choosing specific exercises, questions, and examples that will demonstrate effective ways to build a great exam answer. I love to support my students in their skill development and create enjoyable lessons that leave them feeling confident and proud. Having a genuine passion for the reading and writing of literature, I aim to share this with my students and really engage them in the texts we look at. I am punctual, professional, and friendly, and value a safe and enjoyable learning environment where each student can develop key skills.

My lessons are all 1:1 and will focus on specific skills my student wishes to improve upon. These lessons tend to be 1 hour in duration, although I can adapt to 90 minute sessions if that better suits.
In my sessions, I use real exam questions, effective examples, and engaging exercises to demonstrate and teach useful ways to answer questions. I then encourage students to try these for themselves. I tailor sessions to the individual student, breaking down the English curriculum into specific skills, and selecting engaging activities based on these skills. Often centring on a specific literary text, I use extracts from literature and some of my own examples to showcase methods and techniques that a student can use to write and develop their own answers. I then encourage students to use these techniques to create their own answers to questions, and I give constructive feedback on these answers. Through these exercises, I hope to help students develop a variety of literary, skills in close reading, comprehension, essay writing, etc. I work well with information about the student's specific needs given before the lesson, and aim to tailor each session to suit these needs.
Having achieved grade 9 in GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature, and A* in A-Level English Literature, as well as having worked in a tutoring company and volunteering teaching reading skills to primary school children, I have a wide array of tips and tricks to help students improve in their confidence, independence, learning and revision as they approach exams and develop key literary skills.
Recommendations
Recommendations are written by the tutor's friends, family, and acquaintances.
Phoebe is an excellent English tutor. She provides tailored support to all students, and helps them develop their understanding and thinking, rather than simply memorising facts. She boosts the confidence of her students, and the impact she has is evident.
I have known Phoebe for several years as both a course‑mate and a close collaborator on our English degree. What I value most in her teaching approach is her ability to create an atmosphere that is both intellectually constructive and genuinely supportive; she has a gift for breaking down complex ideas in an accessible and engaging way. One of the experiences that best captures this was our presentation classes on Romantic literature: her clarity of explanation and colorful handouts helped to tackle difficult concepts in interesting ways.
