About Emma
I've worked in several roles of mentorship over the last several years and hope to eventually adapt these skills in the felid of higher education. For the past five years I've worked in a youth athletic program overseeing student success in recreational gymnastics programs, competitive teams, and at seasonal summer camps. While working towards my biochemistry degree I've worked at my university as a tutor and TA for general and organic chemistry courses. As a TA I lead discussion sections for groups of 40 students, while as a tutor, I am able to work with individuals and address more specific concerns one-on-one. Working in these capacities has allowed me to build a plethora of resources for all of my students, each with different learning styles. My degree has also prepared me through a diverse history of coursework in calculus, physics, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and biology, though my teaching speciality lies in the organic chemistry and biochemistry, where I will soon be pursuing a graduate degree.

Learning is an active process which I aim to engage through each of my lessons. My lessons consist of a combination of worked examples along with opportunities for students to apply content themselves before we discuss it together. This approach helps us identify both strengths and gaps in knowledge, which we can then build upon. Mastering topics also requires repeated exposure. I make numerous resources available to my students to try independently, although I encourage students to ask questions about these problems during our sessions as well to clarify any confusions. My goal is not only to help my students in a particular subject, but to help them become confident and independent learners, and this in itself is a learned skill which I will create opportunities to practice.
