About Douglas

Hi, my name is Douglas, I am an undergraduate Maths and Physics student at the University of Glasgow currently in my third year of an honours degree.

I like to teach for many reasons.
Firstly I am extremely passionate about my field of study and love to educate people about what I find the most interesting subjects in the world.

I also believe that not all students can read a formula and fully understand its potential uses. I believe that students in school are mis-sold subjects such as maths and physics and are made to believe that these are mundane and formulaic with no long-lasting benefit other than to pass the exam. While passing the exam will be the priority of my lessons, I hope to inspire students to really enjoy their time studying maths instead of getting out a textbook and doing hundreds of questions. I believe that once a student can develop a passion for maths-based subjects then they will find it much easier to improve and enhance their skill.

I also want to remove the stigma of having a tutor as being a sign of failure. While I was in high school I had a maths tutor and at the time believed that what I thought maths was, was a waste of my time and unenjoyable. I want to inspire students to begin to enjoy maths abased subjects and help them achieve their best,

About the lesson

I like to help students get a full grasp of the subject that they are studying for. This may mean taking it back to the fundamentals in order for them to understand what we are doing and sometimes more importantly why we are doing this.

My lessons consist of 45 minutes of teaching and 15 minutes of talking. The 15 minutes of talking is to help me learn how to help the student. This gives us time to discuss what it is that they feel they would benefit most from while also giving me an opportunity to assess where I think students will need to work.

I believe that maths and physics, like most things, require practice. Instead of teaching a formula I like to discuss an exam-style question which the student has identified as a potential weak point and help the students through this question. Once we have figured out how to do this style of question I will set students some additional questions to help refine their skills which we can go over in the following session.

My lessons are for students of all ages in high school including National five and HIgher candidates (or equivalent).
