About Merrill
My name is Merrill (but many people call me Emmy) and I am an Environmental Science student at the University of California, Los Angeles. I am currently doing a concentration in Conservation Biology, and I absolutely loved taking Geography and Biology throughout secondary school!
I received A*s in all i/GCSE subjects and received 7 (highest grade) in both Geography and Biology Higher Level as part of my International Baccalaureate Diploma. I received 43 (out of 45).
The main reason I am a passionate tutor is that I know how difficult some topics can be, particularly when rushed over in class. I know that tutoring would have benefitted me significantly.
In past tutoring experiences, I have found it to be extremely rewarding to see students grow to become confident in their academic abilities.

Over the past year, I have taught and mentored secondary school Biology and Environmental Science students. I have also volunteered in primary schools, teaching young children, and have provided my younger brother with quality Biology and general Science mentorship for numerous years.
During this difficult online period, I have found that many students have lost engagement and passion for their love subjects. I like to help students either re-ignite their passion or find a new interest by providing attentively catered sessions. In the beginning, I assess each student's learning style and like to provide sessions that are specific to each student's needs. Within this, I look at the student's current work and their goals. No matter the learning style, I like to challenge student's learning by asking questions that connect different parts of the curriculum. I find that this allows students to really reflect upon their learning, and actively tests their memory. Furthermore, in sessions, I like to target the student's areas of weakness and develop their confidence in their ability.
The typical length of a lesson varies on the student's age and their preferred learning style! I have had some students prefer two 30-minute lessons per week and others just a one-hour session. It also can vary with the needs of the student at the time. For example, if the student has an exam approaching, I generally spend a longer time working through example questions. I am flexible.
