About Michelle

Hello! My name is Michelle Whatley, and I am so excited to have the opportunity to be your tutor! I have been teaching in the classroom for ten years, and I still feel the same joy today as when I first became an educator. Over the past ten years, I have had quite a range of teaching experiences. I taught English in Spain, I teach English online to Chinese students, and I teach English as a second language to middle school students. I have taught Spanish to students from ages 5 to 18, from beginner level to Spanish for native speakers. I have lived overseas, I travel, I enjoy learning about new cultures, and I believe language is so beautiful. I feel very confident in my teaching skills, and I think any student would feel like they can trust me. This is important for language learning because students need to feel comfortable taking risks in communication! As your tutor, I will work hard to find your best learning style to make learning relevant and fun for you.

About the lesson

I absolutely love teaching! I believe that bringing the real-world into the classroom makes learning fun and relevant. I use many different teaching styles because students learn in different ways. I use pictures, music, adventure, problem-solving, acting, games, dialogue, story-telling, videos, grammar exercises, vocabulary, and so much more! A typical lesson would begin with a warm-up, usually one full of repetition. Repetition is important for foundational conversation that must be remembered. A warm-up is also important for getting to know my students on a personal level. Afterwards, I introduce the student to the main topic of the lesson. I ask questions, assess prior knowledge of the topic, and make sure the student sees how the topic is relevant in their own life. Again, bringing the real-world into the classroom is important for building interest and fun! The main lesson itself starts with direct teaching. Then I use one of many different teaching methods to give the student an opportunity to practice with the content. Before the lesson is over, I assess the student on what they have learned, and I have a wrap-up activity to review what we have learned in the lesson. My lessons are for students of any age who want to learn Spanish, from beginner to advanced. My lessons are also for students learning English as a Second Language, preferably from ages 10 and up. I believe what sets me apart as a tutor is my ability to get students interested in learning. I present information in such a way that students want to learn and practice, and they seem to have a great time with me!
