About Sonia

Hello!
My name is Sonia Garcia-Jany and I was born and raised in Tenerife (not in a holiday hotel - in an actual local neighbourhood). When I was 8 years old, I moved to the UK and I could barely speak English. As you can imagine, this was terrifying, and I had no idea how to communicate with people here. What I found out is that when I stopped caring about speaking perfectly, my English skills drastically improved because I was no longer afraid to practise. (That's how I am now learning Polish too, my mother's native language). Learning another language is probably one of the most humbling experiences I have ever gone through and I understand the struggle it takes to improve. It's important to recognise that what you are doing is impressive and you shouldn't judge yourself harshly over making mistakes. It's all a part of the learning process.

About the lesson

What I find to be the most useful way of teaching is to meet the student as they are. Instead of creating a hierarchy of levels to categorise people, I prefer to note what they understand and what they don't. Then, I work with that and adapt my lesson plans to work on what they are struggling with. Anyone can learn anything as long as they consistently practise and I often bring back old topics that were challenging just to make sure that they actually understand it.
I also provide a no-judgement environment. I once couldn't speak English and I must have made a billion mistakes (I still do!). But learning is not about perfection, it's about improvement.
