About Maria

Hi, I’m Maria! I’m a UCL graduate with a BA in Ancient World (Classics), and I currently work in a management role in the construction industry.

History has always been one of the subjects I’ve enjoyed most. What I particularly like about it is that doing well involves much more than remembering dates and events - it’s about understanding why things happened, considering different perspectives and learning how to build a convincing argument from evidence.

Having spent years studying humanities, I know that essay questions and source analysis can initially feel difficult, even when you understand the actual topic. I’d like to help students bridge that gap and become more confident turning what they know into well-structured answers.

I’m patient, approachable and happy to explain something in different ways until it makes sense. My aim is for lessons to feel relaxed and encouraging while still giving students clear, practical ways to improve their work and become more independent.

I want to tutor because I genuinely enjoy discussing History and helping people understand complicated ideas, and I’d find it really rewarding to see a student become more confident in a subject I personally enjoy.

About the lesson

My lessons are tailored to the individual student, focusing on both their historical knowledge and their ability to turn that knowledge into strong exam answers.

I particularly focus on essay planning and structure, building clear arguments, selecting and using evidence effectively, source analysis and exam technique. Rather than simply memorising facts, I want students to understand how events connect, why they happened and how to evaluate different interpretations.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes and can be adapted around the student’s current school topics, homework, upcoming assessments or particular areas they find difficult. We can work through practice questions together, break down sources, plan essays and identify practical ways to improve their answers.

I graduated from University College London (UCL) with a BA in Ancient World (Classics), which involved extensive study of history and historical sources alongside research, critical analysis and academic essay writing. My professional career also requires me to analyse detailed information, construct clear arguments and communicate complex subjects in an understandable way.

My lessons are primarily aimed at KS3 and GCSE History students, including those who want to improve their general confidence as well as students preparing for examinations.
