About Alex

I am a second-year medical student at the University of Edinburgh who obtained 3 A*s at A level in biology, chemistry and maths. I obtained 10 A*s at GCSE. I have been tutoring for 4 years, since I was 14 years old and have experience tutoring from primary school to GCSE maths. I began with, and spent lots of time, doing 11+ tutoring (in reasoning, maths, English and interviews), including for a tutoring company at Woodhouse College focused on 11+ prep. I achieved a distinction in my first year of medical school (approximately top decile). I obtained all 4 offers for medical school after getting a top percentile score in the UCAT (3240 b1). Through my work, I have been exposed to people of many backgrounds with different perspectives, including learning difficulties like dyscalculia and ADHD. This taught me to tailor my tutoring style to the student, informed on best evidence and honed by getting to know the individual and how they work. I have up-to-date DBS and PVG checks, alongside references from people I have tutored over the years which I can supply upon request.

About the lesson

My teaching methodology tends to be using resources to understand a topic before completing practice questions assisted. Nearer exams I tend to focus on past papers. Nearer to exams or mocks I research the specific exam technique favoured by the exam board. I have found many children to work better when the information is made visual and interactive, using things like flashcards and OneNote. I also have many personal tips and tricks as I am still a student to help remember things more easily.
