About Verity
I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2009 with a Masters degree in History of Art, and I have a 150-hour Premier TEFL qualification to teach English as a foreign language.
I worked for ten years in hospitality management until the beginning of 2020 before embarking on a career change. In teaching I have found the natural expression of all the things I loved the most in my previous roles: championing people in their acquisition of knowledge and in the consolidation of new skills, and the stimulation of working in a live environment where being flexible, adaptable and resilient provides the framework for a fun and safe space that is mutually beneficial.
I have experience delivering academic support for students working towards their SATs and their GCSEs. This academic year, I am working in an Alternative Provision school two days a week where I am the GCSE English Language tutor for a group of twelve vulnerable and/or disadvantaged young people. On other days, I work in a language school in central London where I teach English to (adult) speakers of other languages. I also work with private clients in a similar capacity.
Since 2020, I have been working as a volunteer English tutor for an education charity whose work is focussed on closing the attainment gap between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers, and helping them achieve meaningful academic outcomes in key benchmarking examinations.
Just for fun, I have a side hustle providing an English-language copy editing service and distance-learning language instruction for business-people and students who are native Japanese speakers operating in an Anglophone environment.
As you can see, all my waking hours are dedicated to the functional uses and creative joys of the English language!
My motivation for tutoring is a personal one, and quite close to the bone. My partner’s 10 year old niece has a tutor, and seeing her confidence sky-rocket (and, subsequently, her grades) took me back to my primary school days when a teacher misinterpreted my shyness and focus on neat (slow) handwriting for a lack of ability. I can still feel that teacher’s disdain 25 years later, and it continues to impact me. The most important part of tutoring for me is that every child knows that they have a champion.
My most recent Enhanced DBS Check certificate is from autumn 2021 and is registered with the update service. I have also undergone training around the safeguarding of children.

I'm an English tutor, and I'm currently working with several organisations to provide academic intervention and support for GCSE English Language students. In these roles, I work with people one-to-one and in groups of up to 12.
I am a fun and compassionate teacher, and I create a safe space for my students to learn in an environment where mistakes are an opportunity to grow.
I believe that your secret weapon as a learner is knowing and embracing your personal learning style. I know that people are best able to grasp, digest, consolidate and retain new information when it is presented to them in a way that feels aligned with how they experience and interpret the world.
One of the first things I will do with you is to establish what kind of learner you are they are so that the process of learning feels natural and intuitive. I will utilise your personal learning style to help them progress towards higher levels of academic attainment as well as coaching you to develop intrinsic confidence in your abilities.
For GCSE students, I will curate course content around the skills assessed in the English Language papers, including discussing the effect of language and structure, critical evaluation, how to structure a comprehensive, evidence-based answer, and how to approach unseen texts. If it's something that you need some support with or clarification on, we will review spelling, punctuation and grammar, consolidating the hard skills of language usage.
The above is intended as a guide so that you can get a feel for me and my lessons. How we work and what we cover will be as unique as you are! My one-to-one tuition space is always nurturing and warm, with the focus on low risk/threat and high challenge/stretch.

I’ve known Verity for 7 years. She has always demonstrated the values every great tutor needs: she’s patient, a great listener, very articulate and intelligent and, maybe above all these, she’s a lot of fun to be around. Nick O’Donnell. Managing Director. The Spinning Plate
Verity was my LOVELY line manager when I was 22 and truly made working a difficult job enjoyable. She’s very empathetic and patient and always made it her top priority to ensure she was teaching me in a way that I could understand whether that be visually or physically. She is a very approachable person, asking her a question however silly was always super easy to do. She’s thorough and detailed and organised and is such a lovely human! Could not recommend her enough!
Verity is an incredible tutor.
Her positive reinforcement, patience, love for language, care and attention to strive for her students to learn is second to none.
