• When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

  I've always loved maths and science, and by extension had pretty good marks. In school people used to ask me for help very often, and I enjoyed explaining questions to them. After graduation, I wanted to keep feeding that passion, so I decided to start tutoring.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I absolutely love teaching EGD, it's by a long shot my favorite subject. As an architecture student, helping with things like civilbis definitely something I'm very passionate about. Almost as an extension, physics is more of a favorite than chem, and I will literally do Geometry for fun.

• Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher who inspired you?

  I had a great tutor in high school, and I always admired her kindness and dedication. I always looked forward to her classes, and I hope to bring that same energy to the classes I teach.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  I think more than anything a good tutor needs to be patient, and needs to be knowledgeable. Some students need you to explain the same concept ten different ways before they grasp it, others need you to be prompted to think for themself about the topics, and some need to be told what happens just a tiny bit deeper than surface level. Having the capacity to respond to these learning styles is what makes a good tutor.

• Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your student days?

  I remember when I was in grade 10, a teacher handed me a test with a big fat 60 on it - considering I was getting 90%+ before this was rather a shock. I started working as hard as I could at maths, I studied and did practice tests until they ran out my ears. Eventually, my marks came up. Seeing my next test with a ninety once again, the guy who sat next to me asked me how I got such good marks. That's the story of my first student, for months I helped him out when he got stuck and soon he was helping others too.

• Did you face any difficulties at school or university?

  I had all my days with life orientation, it's the only subject I've ever failed, and I used to get stuck with my Afrikaans teachers on the daily, I don't think I was an easy student, I knew my stuff, but that gave me a chance to cause trouble in the classrooms.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

  I think the subjects themselves are a passion, and helping people, not necessarily teaching itself. My motto is to leave an impression wherever I go, and if possible, have it be an impression of a world getting better.

  I care, I absolutely want my students to be the best they can be, to achieve their dreams in life.
