About Darren
Hello!
I’m Darren, a third-year student at University of Oxford (Lady Margaret Hall) reading Psychology and Philosophy.
My university training covers many of the same bases as an A-Level curriculum, with far greater exploratory depth—I specialise in helping students achieve an in-depth, workable understanding of their topics, not just an ability to memorise them. As an American navigating the UK system from the outside, I’ve had a lot of experience figuring out how to succeed within the structure of British education, which informs the way that I teach students.
In terms of teaching, I have direct experience: as the president of my high school’s National Honor Society chapter, I coordinated my school’s peer tutoring programme, where I managed the partnering of tutors and tutees, tracked each pair’s progress, and worked one-to-one with many students.
I’m flexible, friendly, always ready to re-explain or review things when necessary, and genuinely interested in the subjects that I teach! I know exactly what it’s like to learn under a high-pressure environment, and I’m here to help take as much stress from the process as possible.

Who I'm for
- I tutor A-level Psychology or Philosophy students who want the deep understanding and critically evaluative writing capabilities necessary for excelling in their subjects with top grades (A/A*). I’m also available for people who are seeking admission into competitive programmes for these topics, including universities, as I have seen first-hand what is valued at this higher level of study.
My Techniques
- I attack complex issues (from utilitarianism to neuroscience) by breaking them down to big-picture ideas, then working from there to build detail, critique, and nuance, a technique to create hyper-developed arguments that I’ve learned at Oxford.
- I create charts and diagrams to help visualise ideas and draw links between them; using this method, I have students compare different sides of debates against each other to form a deep and wide understanding of the topic at hand.
- I focus on examination preparation using a combination of past-paper practice and active recall so that students don’t just memorise their material, but flexibly understand it.
- I work with students to create revision and study objectives to fit their timeframe and hit their goals.
- I read examination guidelines with students to help them develop strategies best suited for their abilities, and make sure that they understand what is being asked of them (‘evaluate’, ‘to what extent’) so that they can give examiners what they are looking for.
Lesson
