About Matt
My academic background is in physics: I studied at Oxford for my BA and went on to obtain a PhD from Durham University. Subsequently, after a couple of years doing academic research, I spent several years working in finance for a hedge fund. After retiring, I focused on my family and became a full-time parent of two daughters. My tutoring experience dates back to my time as a graduate student, when I worked part-time teaching both at school and undergraduate level. Both then and now I have gained immense satisfaction in helping students to progress their understanding of difficult subjects; this is a key motivation for me as a tutor.

My lessons adapt to the needs of the student, with learning objectives discussed and agreed at the outset. Each lesson is one hour long, conducted online, and for the purpose of teaching I use both online resources and traditional classroom tools (in particular, a whiteboard!) Responding to feedback is essential to effective tutoring; throughout the lesson I regularly check the student’s level of understanding and encourage questions and comments.
