About James
I graduated from BYU-Idaho with a BA in Theater Studies in 2022. My background spans sales, arts administration, and web development, which has taught me how to communicate clearly and adapt to different people and situations — skills I bring directly into tutoring. I currently substitute teach in Lufkin ISD and completed hands-on tutoring experience through the Study Smart program at Lufkin Middle School.
Outside of work I love singing in choirs and spending time with my family. I’m a real person who genuinely enjoys watching students grow in confidence, and I’d love to be part of that for your child.

My lessons are tailored to each student’s needs and learning style. I start by getting to know where a student is struggling and what their goals are, then we build from there. For reading and literary analysis, I focus on teaching students how to think through a text — identifying themes, author’s purpose, tone, and evidence — rather than just giving them answers. For writing, I work on structure, clarity, and finding the student’s own voice.
My theatre background means I keep things engaging and interactive. Reading doesn’t have to be dry — I use discussion, real-world connections, and sometimes even performance techniques to help students connect with what they’re reading. Sessions are conversational and low-pressure, because students learn best when they feel comfortable making mistakes.
I’m happy to work from a student’s current class assignments, a specific book they’re struggling with, or a general skills-building plan. Whatever they bring to the table, we’ll work with it.
