About Eirin

Disability retired high school teacher with extensive international experience. I grew up and currently live in Norway, but have also lived in Canada, Switzerland, Germany and England, and the two men I have married come from Cameroon and the USA. My daughter was brought up trilingual, with French and Norwegian spoken at home, and English in her International School.

Fellow teachers and students tend to describe me as charismatic, fun, a good story teller, very clear and sensitive. My ability to handle unexpected situations has made many colleagues ask me for advice, and students tend to trust me enough to ask intimate questions very quickly. I have never been made aware of having broken that trust.

My greatest strengths are improvisations, a vault of knowledge that always seems to surprise people, and the ability to read non-verbal language so I will be able to pick up on YOUR problem areas as well as when progress is too slow or too fast.

I prefer to teach to specific problems, so my chosen method is to ask for a presentation of some kind, oral or in writing, adapted to the student's level. Once I have observed their way of using the language, I can identify problem areas and taylor lessons to get rid of any confusion in the most efficient way possible.

One method that proved highly successful when I taught high school was to make work sheets for issues that I found in essays, such as these:

Their, there, or they're?
To, too or two?
Search or search for?
Pronunciation "shore" or "sure"? "Yell" or "jell"? "So" or "Sow"?
Is the missing word in the sentence "under" or "during"

I particularly like teaching children that are not yet negative to learning, but have taught all ages, including professional level.

I am qualified to teach English and French up to and including high school in Norway, documented by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.

Having grown up with Norwegian as my mother tongue and Sami spoken by family members every day, as well as some Finnish from time to time, languages always came easy to me. I learned English in School since the age of 10, and read Roald Dahl's "Tales of the Unexpected" with great enjoyment at the age of 12. I also learned French for two years, and then plunged into an all French speaking school for my Bachelor's degree. It took me almost exactly 6 weeks before I realized I was dreaming in French, after having felt like a fish on land in the beginning. During the first year in hotel school I also learned German, and was thrown right in at the deep end with an internship in the German speaking part of Switzerland.

These experiences has made it very clear to me that the usual method of lesson - memorising - repetition and testing can be bypassed with great success in many cases.

Students that have above average cognitive capacity are my greatest joy to teach.
